Craig Sherman of Gaia Online: WoW is "not a success"

"See if you can follow this reasoning: WoW has ten million players, which is nice and all, but there are actually 800 million teens in the world. "This week, The Care and Feeding of Warriors talks about Expertise. Therefore, since Blizzard hasn't reached even 10% of them (80 million), WoW is not actually a success. There's going to be a lot of math talk. That's what Craig Sherman of Gaia Online (a casual, browser-based MMO) said to folks at the M16 Marketing conference in San Francisco this week.It will probably have an error or two in it. He claims that WoW's subscription fee has hampered its growth, and that it would be even bigger if there was a free-to-play model. But his reasoning is unstable there to say the least.Mr. Part of the reason WoW is so successful is that Blizzard has had the cash to put up for new servers, new content, and a brand new HQ, and with a free-to-play model, they wouldn't be making nearly as much money as they are.Rossi needs to get some int gear for writing these columns. Not to mention the quality of the players -- in my experience, part of the reason WoW is such a good game is that when people pay to play it, you often get a much more interested and involved player base.Expertise is useful for tanking and melee DPSing, so it seemed time to discuss it. And of course, while yes, WoW hasn't reached a larger fraction of its ""potential"" player base (however you define that -- what makes Sherman think that Blizzard is targeting teens at all. Also, I've recently realized I can't actually hit the 'expertise cap' as a tank with the gear I can get. ), anyone who thinks a 10 million player MMO is ""not a success"" needs to examine the rest of the MMO market more closely. Will there be a game bigger than World of Warcraft.Sad but true. We live in interesting times since patch 2.3 here in warrior land.
It sure seems like it -- at some point in the future, there should be a game that does go free to play and does hit on all the marks -- casual, hardcore, serious, fun -- that World of Warcraft does (in fact, maybe WoW itself will someday open up a free-to-play model).Whereas previous to this patch, we had good old fashioned bonuses to our weapon skill (remember the old Edgemaster's Handguards. But to claim that WoW has somehow suffered from its subscription model is pretty far from the truth. " . Admit it, you wore these at 60. Some of you wore them at 70. You don't have to lie to us, we know.) we now live in the magical world of expertise rating and expertise. What is expertise, and what isn't it. Well, for starters, expertise is not chance to hit. or wow Expertise can help you hit more often in an indirect manner... it reduces the chance for a mob to dodge or parry your attacks. so technically yes you'll be hitting them more often. world of warcraft powerleveling But + hit items directly reduce the chance an attack will miss, which in World of Warcraft is entirely different from a dodge or parry (just ask any warrior trying to hit the Overpower button). Furthermore, expertise is not weapon skill. The expertise system replaced bonuses to weapon skill on items, but it did not actually replace weapon skill: weapon skill up to 350 (at level 70) still exists. wow po Expertise is just (just, he says) a direct reduction of your chance to have your attacks dodged or parried. Unlike the old days with weapon skill bonuses, as far as I know there's no relationship between expertise and glancing blows. (If anyone out there has information that contradicts me here, please share it.) So if expertise isn't going to raise your chance to hit, why am I so excited about it.
eve isk ""Focus is a powerful tool built into the default UI that I just don't use nearly as much as I should. With '/focus"" (and a number of key bindings), you can set up a ""focused"" target that, with one keypress or macro, you can snap back to and cast whatever needs to be casst. Resto4Life has been putting together a great series on Focus and how to use it: They've hit on hibernating, healing with focus, and now using your focus' target to deal out debuffs. The situation is that you're in a raid and you're healing -- you have a little extra mana and you want to use it to throw debuffs on the main tank's target, but you don't want to miss a second of watching the main tank's bar. wow powerleveling Using macros, you can actually cast spells on your focus' target (in this case, your focus would be the MT) without ever changing targets -- just set up a macro to cast the spell, put the button on your bar, and rather than ever having to switch targets, you can just run a macro. You can even use ""modifier:shift"" and ""modifier:ctrl"" to switch spells and/or targets. And with simple addons, you can watch your focus target even when you tab away. Focus is such a powerful tool that it's a little overwhelming to think of all the things that it can make easier in game.

The Scout Report returns, and there is much rejoicing

"No idea how I missed this for so long (we reported on it once that I can find, way back in June of last year), but BBB is right -- The Scout Report is a terrific WoW webcomic that could probably use some more attention."Focus is a powerful tool built into the default UI that I just don't use nearly as much as I should. World of Warcraft Shadow Priest Raid Tactics

"Created this Shadow Priest Raid Tactics guide for our WOW guild (Semper Fi on the EU Hellfire realm) forum, but it’s not accessible to non-guild members so posting it here as well for other Shadow Priests. My Shadow Priest: Trelp on the EU Hellfire Realm, is my first and only level 70 WOW character and so I learnt near enough everything I know about the World of Warcraft whilst playing Trelp."Focus is a powerful tool built into the default UI that I just don't use nearly as much as I should. I knew nothing about shadow priests when I created my priest (planned to be a healer) and wasn’t until level 45 (5 talent points in wand and I didn’t want to re spec :-)) the shadow priests shadowy world opened to me. When I reached level 70 I had a mixture of healing and DPS gear, my first steps into Karazan (days after reaching level 70, raiding shadow priests are in short supply) was in gear with ~500 bonus healing and ~350 bonus damage (laughable now)! I didn’t have a clue what I was doing since 99.99% of groups I’d leveled in I’d healed (which in hindsight does not make a lot of sense). With '/focus"" (and a number of key bindings), you can set up a ""focused"" target that, with one keypress or macro, you can snap back to and cast whatever needs to be casst. Fortunately I’d kept a lot of DPS gear in the bank and so within a week or two of Kara runs (couple of lucky drops from early bosses) was up to around 700 bonus damage. I learn quickly and soon found my feet as a raiding shadow priest and a couple of months later with around 800-900 bonus shadow damage found my way to Semper Fi a serious raiding guild who was badly in need of raiding shadow priests (at the time had one regular raiding shadow priest). Over night went from a guild that could barely attempt Gruul to one that had Gruul on farm and was at the early stages of Serpentshrine Cavern (SSC, taken down Hydross the Unstable and The Lurker Below once if I recall correctly, perfect time to join).Resto4Life has been putting together a great series on Focus and how to use it: They've hit on hibernating, healing with focus, and now using your focus' target to deal out debuffs. The situation is that you're in a raid and you're healing -- you have a little extra mana and you want to use it to throw debuffs on the main tank's target, but you don't want to miss a second of watching the main tank's bar.
As I type this introduction we have cleared Serpentshrine Cavern and on the last boss of The Eye Kael (not had our first try yet, Christmas break) and expect to be in MH early next year (can’t wait). " .Using macros, you can actually cast spells on your focus' target (in this case, your focus would be the MT) without ever changing targets -- just set up a macro to cast the spell, put the button on your bar, and rather than ever having to switch targets, you can just run a macro. Useful Farming Tip

"Useful Farming Tip #1 You should always farm with the highest level character you have in the same faction (i.e. Horde or Alliance) as the intended recipient of your farming efforts. This will save you countless hours of frustration, death, and below-par farming. Linen Cloth Humanoid mobs in the 5-15 level range drop linen cloth. Westfall: Defias Looters and Defias Trappers have an average combined drop rate of 76%. They are level 11-14 and are mostly present in the Central and Western areas of Westfall. The Barrens: The Kolkar Wranglers, Bloodchargers and others, located in Central Barrens near Crossroads, all have similar excellent linen cloth drop rates. They are mostly level 11-16 and should present no problems. All these mobs also have excellent respawn rates, so the place would have to be very crowded for you to run out of mobs to kill. Wool Cloth Humanoid mobs in the 14-36 level range drop wool cloths. The mobs with best drop rates are: The Mosshide Gnolls in Wetlands. Mosshide Gnolls of every stripe except the Mosshide Alphas have Wool Cloth drop rates of about 36%. I speak from experience when I say that the respawn rates are incredibly fast, sometimes so fast you won't have time to loot the chests that appear every so often in the Mosshide camps. Stockades and Deadmines Instance. If you are farming with a high-level character, as you should, then you should have no problems clearing out either of these instances in little over 30 minutes. You should have between 60 and 100 pieces of Wool Cloth, and quite a bit of Linen to boot." "Silk Cloth Silk cloths primarily from humanoid mobs in the 25-40 level range, some exceptions apply. While they can be found in Gnomeregan (instance) as well as from the Bloodsail people in Stranglethorn Vale, the very best place to farm Silk Cloth is: The Scarlet Monastery.
The Scarlet Monastery Instance, in Northern Tirisfal Glades, is absolutely awash with Silk Cloth, in traditional ecclesiastical opulence. Going by yourself to Scarlet Monastery will yield more Silk Cloth than you can carry, and I'm only exaggerating a little bit. Definitely make room in your bags before you go. Mageweave Mageweave is very useful for tailors/enchanters who can create relatively valuable items to disenchant. wow gold For this reason, the competition for the best farming spot is usually pretty fierce. Be sure to implement Useful Farming Tip #1 (farm with your highest level character) if you want to actually farm anything. Deadwood Furbolgs in southern Felwood are level 47-50 mobs and have a combined drop rate for Mageweave of over 100%, meaning that if you kill 100 of them, in the end you will have more than 100 Mageweave. This is pretty hard to beat, and is also well known. Runecloth Runecloth drops from Humanoid mobs level 50 and up, all the way to 61-62 in Outlands. wow power level There are several excellent farming spots in Azeroth and Outlands for Runecloth, and they are: Silithus. The Twilight Cultists, Avengers, etc, seem to be made of the stuff. You can expect an aggregated drop rate of over 35% from these mobs. Western and Eastern Plaguelands. wow gold All the Undead in both these areas have excellent drop rates for Runecloth, and make an excellent farming spot, since you're unlikely to run out of undead to kill. Hellfire Peninsula. If you have the Burning Crusade Expansion Pack, you can farm Runecloth from Bleeding Hollow Peons (around coordinates 56,70). They reportedly have a 32% drop rate for Runecloth. wow power leveling The Unyielding Footmen, Knights and Sorcerers in the Expedition Armory (just south of Honor Hold) also have exceptionaly good Runecloth drop rates. Netherweave Pretty much all humanoids in the Outlands drop Netherweave, as it is -- for now -- the top of the list as far as cloth goes.
The best drop rates are for level 70 and up mobs in Netherstorm, however there is one exception: Voidspawns. The Voidspawns resemble the Warlock's Voidwalker. wow level up They are not too tough to kill and can be found all round the huge diamond that dominates South Western Nagrand. The Voidspawns are in the 64-66 level range, and drop Netherweave at a combined rate of roughly 79%" .

WoW Hunter Leveling Tips

"Many people, when they start out playing World of Warcraft, will start with a hunter character. This character is easy to level and has the ability to tame a pet and can use this pet to help him fight for a long as you play the game. So if you want to start playing this popular game and are starting out as a hunter, read on to discover some great hunter leveling tips that can help you in your quest to get to a level 70. This is the highest level you can achieve. Tip #1. Do not go solo all the time. Although the hunter has the ability to go solo all the time and do well, it does not mean that he can’t do well in a group. Joining groups and finding a friend that can help you power level will be a fast way to level your character. Like any society, it’s who you know that will get you places. Tip #2. Complete quests. This is a great way to gain experience points. Go to the towns and search for characters that have a question mark above their heads. This means that the character has a quest for you to complete. Click on the character to discover what the quest is. You can either accept or decline. The more quests you complete, the more experience points you will receive. Experience points are what increases your levels. Tip #3. Take good care of your pet. While your pet is not able to do as much damage in a fight as your weapons, they can be a significant asset to a battle. Keep your pet well fed so that he can inflict maximum damage. Tip #4. wow gold Kill things on or around your level. Find a good solo spot that is not too crowded with monsters that spawn fast.
Kill as many monsters as you can and keep repeating this for experience points. wow power level This is a great way to level your character and your pet. Tip #5. Stay rested as much as possible. When you log out of the game, make sure that your hunter is inside of an inn or a major city. wow gold Doing this will allow your experience bar to turn blue and you will gain double experience when you fight monsters while the bar is blue. A blue bar will signify that you are rested. " "In World of Warcraft, there are 6 varieties of cloth, if we include Netherweave Cloth, which is only found in Outlands (requires Burning Crusade). Pieces of cloth drop most commonly from mobs, but bolts can also be found in various chests as well as trunks you may find while fishing. They are: Linen Wool Silk Mageweave Runecloth Netherweave Cloth is very useful for all classes and all races, because everyone can take the First Aid secondary profession. wow power leveling Indeed, everyone not only can, but should. In addition to First Aid, cloth is useful to almost every one who has a Crafting (as opposed to Gathering) primary profession. Cloth is obviously crucial to tailors to craft their wares. A limited number of Leatherworking and Blacksmithing recipes also call for Bolts or Pieces of cloth. wow level up When a leatherworker or blacksmith requires a bolt of cloth, he will either have to call on a guild mate, or, more commonly, purchase the bolt from the local Auction House. The best way to gather cloth is, like almost everything else in World of Warcraft, to farm it. Here are the best places and the top mobs to kill to farm the different types of cloth. Please note that unless you are a tailor, the cloth you pick up during the course of your adventures should be more than enough to level up your First Aid skill, with stacks to spare for the Auction House! iDemise Alliance Leveling Guide

"During 2007, a couple of new leveling guides for World of Warcraft were released and when it comes to Alliance leveling they both do a good job of toppling the long-time top guide by Brian Kopp from its pedestal. One of them is from Team iDemise and the other is from Zygor. For this review, I’ll cover the Team iDemise Alliance leveling guide, but be sure to keep an eye out for my Zygor review as well. So who are Team iDemise. Team iDemise is a professional group of gamers who play a variety of games online. They initially built their reputation playing Counter-Strike: Counter-Strike at tournaments and they are the #1 ranked Counter-Strike source team. wow gold They also have the #1 Ranking for Quake as well. One of their players, “Cursed”, holds the speed record for levels 1-70 in Warcraft with a played time of 6 days and 5 hours. Their new Alliance Leveling Guide offers step-by-step instructions on how to level up to 70 as quickly as they do, by not only telling you which quests you need to complete, but what order to do them in and which squests to skip completely. With their guidance you should easily trim days — or even months — off your played time to get to level 70, depending on what kind of player you are. We are talking extreme efficiency here. wow power level They calculated everything down to the nano-second. I can’t imagine what kind of mind it takes to be that obsessively detail-oriented! One of the best advantages of the Team iDemise guide, and why I recommend you purchase it, even if you already have some other leveling guides, is that each member of the Team took a different Alliance class and leveled them up. Most of the other Alliance guides on the market give tips on how to level with different character classes, but their main guidance is reserved for the Hunter class.
wow gold That’s great if you only ever want to play Hunters, but if you want to try another Alliance class, you’re kind of out of luck when it comes to speed runs. " "By playing each of the Alliance classes, Team iDemise was able to determine by trial and error which routes and quests were too difficult to even bother trying to complete for each character class, thus saving you a ton of time on your own questing. One of the major similarities with other Alliance Leveling Guides is that the Team iDemise Alliance Guide focuses on questing rather than grinding. If you’ve played Warcraft for any length of time its probably become clear to you that grinding is boring and stupid. Questing gains you a lot more experience and it is also more fun. Another huge advantage of the Team iDemise over Brian Kopp’s guide is their customized map mod. wow power leveling It will help increase your leveling speed because you are able to use it to follow their guide completely in-game. You don’t need to alt-tab back and forth between game and guide and you don’t need to hop off to Thottbott to follow the instructions for each quest (as you do with Kopp’s guide). All of the information you need is contained on your map with step-by-step instructions for what you need to do next. In addition, I also prefer the pdf version of the Team iDemise Alliance guide to Brian Kopp’s guide just because it has a pleasing design. wow level up It is very easy to read and features illustrations throughout and conversational step-by-step instructions. It basically has a bit of personality, something I find missing from most guides which just offer a very dry “do this quest here, turn this quest in here” approach. Are you ready to take your Alliance Leveling to the next level.

wow fiction: A Whisper of Love

"Thunder rolled in the skies above, yet clearly no rain had touched the dried soil of the Blasted Lands for a long, long time. The land that had once been the Black Morass were now a decrepit, eerie desert. This was not the gloomy, damp, tree-infested marshlands that his people had first met, when the Horde had first crossed the Dark Portal. No. What dark powers had molded Hellfire Peninsula into what had earned it its new name had followed the Orcish Horde to this world. wow honor leveling A lone orc, draped in dark furs to cover his face from the blowing sand, made its way across the desert. With him, he only carried an imposing battle axe, slung on one shoulder , and a leather pouch gripped tight in his hand. Here, beyond Nethergarde Keep and the Swamp of Sorrows, he was no one. wow level service Here, he was not the chieftain of the Bloodwolves, nor a devoted warrior of Thrall's Horde. Here, he was only himself, here he was on Grimgash. He had left Orgrimmar weeks earlier on this journey. Despite the plea of his clansmen, who claimed his wounds were still too fresh, he had insisted to make this journey. He needed to be there. wow lvl service He could not be late. He stopped at the top of a hill and out of breath, he sunk to one knee. He wiped at his dirtied face and, desperately sucking air in, he fished out a water pouch. Not daring to waste any, he only allowed himself enough water to wet his throat and replaced the cap. wow gold He peered about the area and saw it, not too far from him; a single boulder. What he had sought was now within reach. He was too far too see that there was text engraved in the rough surface, but he knew it was the right one.
He felt it. Only a few more steps... Recharged, he was back on his feet and made his way there, nearly losing his footing once more on the way down the hell. There was nothing to tell this boulder apart from another. wow power leveling It was of a dark reddish brown, the same color as the ground. A single line of engraved text made it unique. 'Rest, Elenial, wife of Grimgash. Shaman of the Horde. Glory is yours. Your home is safe.' For long moments, Grimgash simply stood before the tomb, a thick hand held in a fist over his heart. Finally, he spoke, his voice strong but also wrecked by sorrow, " .

"Getting Involved

"I have always been the type of mom who was totally involved in my kids’ activities, EXCEPT for gaming. Even though I can recall each summer vacation by what videogame dominated their time, I never had the interest to sit down and actually play one with them. cheap wow gold Well, at least until my oldest went off to college and the nest started to dwindle. Both of my kids have been in World of Warcraft since beta. They play on different realms and in different factions. My son, who was still in high school at the time, convinced me I could play World of Warcraft even though I never had done anything in a game other than run into walls in Mario Brothers once or twice. The goal was to be able to play with my daughter while she was away at college. With my son’s help I created Mamadee, an orc (since my daughter was Horde) hunter (like my son’s main character), on Silver Hand (my daughter’s realm). He tutored me and got me over my extreme case of the nerves until I reached level 20 and was able to surprise my daughter by applying to her guild. Yes, by then I had stopped running into walls, though I did on occasion still fall off of the flight towers. wow power leveling My daughter was thrilled when we sprang the surprise on her. She quickly set about introducing me to all her friends. I was approved after my grunt phase (boy did I sweat that poll) and became a member of a wonderful family role-playing guild, Rotten Luck. In this wonderful environment, I dawdled my way through Azeroth at what became known as ""Mamadee pace,"" which means I stopped to smell the roses and experience everything I could along the way.
It took me nine months to get to level 60, but I don't regret a moment of it, even swimming underwater when weather was introduced to see if the raindrops were visible from below the surface. Now level 70 and an officer in Rotten Luck, I’ve also tried out other characters and have filled all 10 slots on the realm. wow gold Recently I was reminded of why I play World of Warcraft. Our guild had its first Gruul kill a week or so ago. I was there dpsing my heart out while my daughter was a healing machine! One of our raiding alliance partners made a video of the kill. When it was posted on our forum I actually cried. You could clearly see Mamadee and her daughter in their first joint initial boss kill. I was at home and she was away at school. How many mothers and daughters can say they shared such a glorious moment. During the past two-plus years I have made many wonderful friends in Azeroth and Outland. really cheap wow gold I have seen the power of the World of Warcraft community change lives in wonderful ways. I know I would have never been able to stay part of my daughter's daily life while she was at college if it were not for guild chat and whispers. We share experiences and memories created in World of Warcraft that IMs just can’t provide. fast wow gold Now I need to get psyched to do the same on my son's PvP server while he's in college! the war between Britain and France

In the late eighteenth century, battles raged in almost every corner of Europe,
as well as in the Middle East, south Africa ,the West Indies, and Latin
America. In reality, however, there was only one major war during this time,
the war between Britain and France. All other battles were ancillary to this
larger conflict, and were often at least partially related to its antagonist’
goals and strategies. France sought total domination of Europe . this goal was
obstructed by British independence and Britain’s efforts throughout the
continent to thwart Napoleon; through treaties. Britain built coalitions (not
dissimilar in concept to today’s NATO) guaranteeing British participation in
all major European conflicts. These two antagonists were poorly matched,
insofar as they had very unequal strengths; France was predominant on land,
Britain at sea. The French knew that, short of defeating the British navy,
their only hope of victory was to close all the ports of Europe to British
ships. Accordingly, France set out to overcome Britain by extending its
military domination from Moscow t Lisbon, from Jutland to Calabria. All of this
entailed tremendous risk, because France did not have the military resources to
control this much territory and still protect itself and maintain order at
home.

French strategists calculated that a navy of 150 ships would provide the force
necessary to defeat the British navy. Such a force would give France a three-to-
two advantage over Britain. This advantage was deemed necessary because of
Britain’s superior sea skills and technology because of Britain’s superior
sea skills and technology, and also because Britain would be fighting a
defensive war, allowing it to win with fewer forces. Napoleon never lost
substantial impediment to his control of Europe. As his force neared that goal,
Napoleon grew increasingly impatient and began planning an immediate attack.
